My family always chooses a motto for the year, such as “always act on a generous impulse,” or “how you do one thing is how you do everything.” Our motto for this year was from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” A motto is a guidepost for how to live, and it is wisdom to meditate on. I love all our family mottoes, but one of my favorites is “Life gives to the giver and takes from the taker,” as stated by noted philosopher Reverend Run of Run-DMC. What’s a motto you’ve lived by? What’s one that might suit you right now?
